Mindfulness Based Harm Reduction

What is Mindfulness?

Paying attention to present moment experiences with openness, curiosity and an willingness to be with what is. (UCLA MARC, 2026)

What is Harm Reduction?

Harm reduction is a evidence-based, non-judgmental approach aimed at reducing the negative health, social, and legal consequences of drug use and other risky behaviors without requiring abstinence. It focuses on keeping people safe, healthy, and alive—meeting them "where they are" to improve quality of life.

What is Mindfulness BASED Harm Reduction?

Mindfulness Based Harm Reduction (MBHR) is an approach that blends mindful awareness with a compassionate, harm reduction mindset. It’s all about helping people build a healthier, more intentional relationship with challenging behaviors—without pressure, shame, or the expectation of perfection.

At its core, MBHR encourages you to slow down, notice what’s happening inside and around you, and make choices that support your well being. It honors your autonomy, meets you exactly where you are, and supports change at your pace.

Here, we focus on:

  • Awareness over autopilot

  • Curiosity over judgment

  • Small steps over all or nothing thinking

  • Safety, empowerment, and self compassion
